"The history of the bodega goes back three generations; Emilio Moro was born in the heart of the Pesquera wine-growing area and grew up treading grapes and racking wine in his native village of Pesquera de Duero, in the province of Valladolid. As early as 14 years old, Emilio helped his father sell 100 large earthenware pitchers of wine to local clients.
This was a different era, when the grapes were crushed, by treading in a large stone trough in the family wine cellar. The skins were pressed using a large wooden beam, the wine was made in casks and sold to seasonal farm laborers who came to work the fields or was taken by cart to other local villages. From this same cellar, wine was sold in quarter-litre jugs to local customers, who would pay by dropping a coin through a groove in the table into a box below, which was kept locked by the father,
the only person with the key."
This wine carries the name of its creator and was the original flagship brand of the Bodega, previously sold as crianzas. However, these concepts have now disappeared, and today, the brand is solely a wine made from vines of between 15 and 25 years old, and which is aged in French and American oak barrels for 12 months.

The word malleolus comes from Latin and means majuelo, which is a name for a vineyard in Pesquera de Duero. This wine was made from selected grapes coming from majuelos of between 25 and 75 years old, where the vines are both free-standing bush vines and also trained on wires. The wine stayed in contact with the skins for a period of 28 days and was then aged in Allier French oak barrels until its bottling.

"The 2005 Malleolus is 100% Tinta del Pais which was barrel-fermented and aged for 18 months in French oak. It will evolve for 5-7 years and provide pleasure through 2020."

“Malleolus de Valderramiro” is made with grapes coming from the Pago de Valderramiro. In this estate the Bodega has three more than 80 year-old vineyards of Tinto Fino (a pure Tempranillo clone). These vines produce a yield of 2,000 kilos of grapes per hectare. The philosophy behind this wine is to let the terroir play as big a part as possible. 30 days of maceration in 3,000 kg vats, malo-lactic fermentation in American oak barrels with stirring of the lees and ageing in French oak barrels for 18 months.
