To the happily lengthening list of serious growers of Muscadet and guardians of ancient Melon vines - and not near the bottom of that list - should now be added the names of Herve and Nicolas Choblet and their Domaine du Haut Bourg. These guys know what they’re doing, producing seriously good Muscadet.

Yet, amazingly, because it’s Muscadet, the regular price is ridiculously low relative to quality. That can be said of any top-notch Muscadet. Still, here’s one of the best, on sale for only $8.80/ bottle and $105.60/case? That’s crazy. That’s Wine Legend’s “Legendary Pricing” at its best. That’s a darn great deal!

“…brilliantly green-gold 2009 Muscadet Cotes de Grandlieu Clos de la Fine - grown on sand-like eroded mica schist and granite - smells mouthwateringly of fresh lime, sea spray, herbs, chicken stock, and shrimp shell reduction, all of which follow on a palate of utmost juiciness and refreshment yet also a striking degree of subtly oily cling; seemingly tactile mineral and lime zest impingement; and lip-smacking salinity. Hints of iodine and fresh red raspberry with its crunchy, tart seeds add further interest and invigoration. This sensational value suggests a Muscadet that has borrowed a bit from Chablis and Nahe Riesling. I would be inclined to plan on relishing it over the coming 9-12 months.”
