THE STORY

Established in 1998, Domaine de Nizas seeks to craft high-quality artisan wines that reveal the outstanding Languedoc terroir of Pézenas, where the vines are grown, as well as its regional heritage. The domain also strives to respect the environment through all vineyard and winemaking practices. Its wines are intended to be enjoyed with food and are balanced, elegant and show a long finish.

The Domaine de Nizas is the latest project for John Goelet, an American of French origin, who since 1972 had already created Clos du Val in the Napa Valley Taltarni in Victoria (Australia) and Clover Hill in Tasmania, in his worldwide quest for quality. Convinced by the potential for quality in the Languedoc region for many years, John Goelet and his trusted advisor Bernard Portet (President of Clos du Val) searched and identified a handful of exceptional “terroirs” before deciding upon the Domaine de Nizas. Wine Spectator has been on to Domaine de Nizas from the beginning and has given high scores to virtually every vintage of this wine. The current issue (September 30, 2010) once again gives an excellent review (see below) and lists Domaine de Nizas 2006 as a “Smart Buy” at $21. But we can do much better than that. At Wine Legend’s $14.99 price, we’d call it a “SUPER Smart Buy!”

And if you are looking for great bargains like this one from the Rhône and the south of France, here are a few choice selections:
Domaine De Mourchon Seguret Grande Reserve 2007

Regular Price : $34.99  Sale Price: $23.99

As for the equally deep ruby/purple-colored 2007 Seguret Grande Reserve, this wine has much more licorice and more depth and body, but displays a similar aromatic and flavor profile. It is broad, expansive, and voluptuously textured, with stunning depth and richness. This is about as good as Seguret can be and actually competes with wines that are much more costly. Drink it over the next 7-10 years.
