Giampaolo Pira recently took the reins at his family’s nine-hectare estate, overseeing the cellars while brother Romolo and father Luigi maintain the vineyards. Pira’s holdings are in the three most prestigious crus in the Serralunga commune: “Margheria,” “Marenca," and “Rionda.” The first Barolo was produced only as recently as 1993, but since then, the family has racked up accolades and high scores from the worldwide press. Pira produces some of the most extroverted wines in Barolo. In 2005 his wines reveal a lovely purity to their fruit. We fell in love with his 2005 Margheria and bought enough to sell this star of the Pira portfolio at a fantastic $37.99 price, plus free shipping on a 6 bottle purchase! This is a wine to drink this fall, which is fine as we expect to take delivery on October 1. Enjoy! |

The 2005 Barolo is simply beautiful. Sweet layers of dark fruit meld into new leather, spices, plums and licorice in this medium-bodied Barolo. The wine possesses notable balance in an approachable, harmonious style. This is an overachieving wine from Azelia in 2005 at this level, and is highly recommended. In 2005 the Barolo is mostly Serralunga fruit. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2017 |

Perhaps the most representative and exciting wines of all La Morra are coming from the cellar of Giuliano Corino. His wines are unbelievably densely-fruited, seamless, velvety and layered: holdings in the choicest parcels of La Morra (Arborina, Giachini and Rocche) don’t hurt! His 2005 Barolo “normale” is made from 100% La Morra fruit, from younger vines in Giachini and Arborina. Fermentation is carried out on the skins in temperature-controlled steel vats for 1 week, the wine is then transferred to 1-year old French barriques, where it ages for 24 months. Intense, opulent and bright with brambly fruit, Giuliano’s gift to you in 2005 is stellar Barolo at yesterdecade’s pricing! 850 cases produced.
