THE STORY
The 2009 vintage was spectacular throughout Europe in general and particularly successful in the northern Rhône. Most of the major wines have not been bottled yet, so it will be awhile before consumers get the chance to find out just how special the 2009 vintage was. But one top wine has already been released, and we’ve got it. Here is a 100% Syrah from 2009 that coats the palate with rich fruit, density, complexity, and balance. It is a thoroughly delicious wine!

Maxime Graillot, son of famed Crozes-Hermitage pioneer Alain Graillot, founded Domaine des Lises and began making very small quantities of Crozes-Hermitage with the 2004 vintage, and we have been thrilled with the results ever since. Compared to Alain’s wines, Maxime’s are similarly exuberant and expressive, yet perhaps with a bit more size and fruit power to them—possibly a result of the fact that Maxime de-stems nearly all of his grapes, whereas Alain does not de-stem. Maxime shares a cellar with his father, and ages his wines in used Burgundy barrels just like Alain.

The bottom line is this: for $15 you’re buying a major league wine at a minor league price. And you get your first opportunity to check out the 2009 vintage.
