Those people who closely follow Italian wines are no doubt aware that Antonio Galloni (of The Wine Advocate) is currently the most respected wine critic in America covering Italian wines. In addition, Mr. Galloni has earned a reputation for having a great palate and generally staying away from score inflation. In other words, when he gives a high score, you can take that to the bank.
Today’s offer serves as a perfect example. It is unusual for an “unknown” wine from Sardinia (or anywhere else) to score 94 points. You think: “Is it really that good?” Having just tasted the 2005 Shardana, we say definitively “yes!”
Mr. Galloni’s review appeared in a recent (June 2010) issue of The Wine Advocate. He flipped out over the entire portfolio from Cantina Santadi. “The 2005 Shardana is an awesome Carignano endowed with exuberant dark fruit, smoke, licorice, sage, rosemary and tar. This is a fairly big, masculine wine with great intensity, depth and roundness. It needs another year or two in bottle for the tannins to settle down. The Shardana is formidable, though, and a terrific choice for hearty cuisines.
