THE STORY

It’s no secret that Spain is synonymous with great wine values. Seemingly, it’s always been that way. Today’s twin offerings are in keeping with the tradition of Spain to offer lots of bang for the buck.

Celler Marti Fabra is located near the French border in close proximity to the renowned El Bulli restaurant. Marti Fabra, a newcomer to the increasingly interesting Spanish wine scene, is located in an appellation that is revealing wonderful potential with its old vine Grenache and Carignan. The Masia Carreras 2004 bottling has rounded out considerably since this Wine Advocate review. We recently tasted it and fell in love! We’d give it at least 92 points.

Vinedos Alonso del Yerro is a new estate established in 2002. The owners employ the renowned Bordeaux vigneron, Stephane Derenoncourt, for both his viticultural and winemaking expertise. The wines are modern in style, made from 100% Tempranillo, fermented and aged in new French oak. Everyone who has ever tasted the 2006 Alonso del Yerro knows that this is a great wine.

Masia Carreras 2004

"The 2004 Masia Carreras is 50% Garnacha, 35% Carinena, and the balance Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The wine was aged in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque and brooding, it reveals notes of crushed stone, wood smoke, leather, red cherry, and black raspberry. On the palate the wine is slightly compact but 2-3 years of additional cellaring should round it out.”

Alonso Del Yerro 2006

Regular Price : $39.99  Sale Price: $23.99

“The 2006 Alonso del Yerro went through malolactic fermentation in new French oak and was aged sur lie for 12 months with batonnage. Purple-colored, it has an enticing bouquet of wood smoke, pencil lead, violets, spice notes, and black cherry jam. Suave, sweet, and layered on the palate, it has loads of savory fruit, excellent concentration, and several years of aging potential. It will be at its best from 2013 to 2026.” 92+ Points Robert M. Parker Jr.’s The Wine Advocate

“Opaque ruby. Fresh red berries and cherry on the nose, with sexy Asian spices and minerals adding energy. Seamless raspberry and candied cherry flavors stain the palate but are almost weightless, with fine-grained tannins adding shape. An understated, precise wine that finishes with excellent clarity and persistence. “ 92 Points Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar

Speaking on Spanish Beauties, here are a few more terrific wines from Spain that reflect Wine Legend’s “Legendary Pricing”:
Alto Moncayo Veraton 2007

Regular Price : $28.99  Sale Price: $21.99

The entry-level 2007 Veraton is 100% estate-grown Garnacha aged for 17 months in new French and American oak before bottling without filtration. Deep crimson-colored, it has a sexy nose of smoke, spice box, lavender, black cherry, and black raspberry that wafts from the glass. Full-bodied on the palate with layers of succulent red and black fruit, it is balanced, pure, and lengthy. Drink it over the next 6-8 years. The vocal low-alcohol crowd will have disdain for this wine; those who enjoy big, powerful, in-your-face wine will love it

Finca Sandoval Salia 2007

Regular Price : $16.99  Sale Price: $11.99

A subtle, balanced red, delivering firm tannins that are fleshed out by dark berry, plum and lots of spice. A touch of dark chocolate shows midpalate, and through to the lingering finish. Give this some air in the glass. Best from 2011 through 2017. 500 cases imported"

Termes 2007

Regular Price : $31.99  Sale Price: $23.99

The 2007 Termes is a bit more elegant with its velvety texture, ripe tannins, and silky finish. It, too, has the ability to improve with 2-3 years of cellaring, but can be enjoyed now.
