Today’s newsletter is personal. It has to be, as the wine we are featuring, Podere La Cerreta “Rio de Messi” 2004 has not been reviewed by anyone with the credentials of a wine critic. But we have tasted it. And we were blown away. Here’s the story:
A saleswoman from a major importer/distributor attended our recent (July 21) 1997 Barolos blind tasting at Il Cappricio. She arrived early, bringing with her a bottle of Podere La Cerreta “Rio de Messi” 2004 for us to sample as an “aperitivo” before we got to the Barolos. As we’ve already stated, we were blown away. This unknown wine tasted like a a great Super Tuscan! Which of course is what it is, a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon from the Tuscan village of Sassetta.
You’ve never heard of Podere La Cerreta? Neither had we, but that’s what you’d expect from a 400 case production. This is a tiny, family run organic farm and winery, probably unknown in the next village. But trust us folks, this wine is easily worth the $50 it was originally supposed to sell for.
By the time we had finished the 1997 Barolos, the deal was done. “How many cases do you have?” “Twenty seven” was her response. “We’ll take them all.” (Except for three cases that went to Il Capriccio. They tasted the wine, too”
