Today’s newsletter features two white wines that have little in common beyond the fact that they are both featured in the current issue of Wine Spectator and both are praised to the heavens.
Lopez de Heredia, the oldest and most famous winery in Rioja, produces a dry, complex white wine “Viña Gravonia” which generally sells for around $30. It is an amazingly good food wine, with tingling acidity, minerals, spice, and wonderful citrus fruit. We have carried several vintages of this wine in the past, but the newly released 2000 is quite possibly the best yet. This is as serious as it gets for a $20 white wine (at Wine Legend’s sale price.)
For half that amount, we urge you to try Southern Right Sauvignon Blanc 2009, a new wine (at least to us) that delivers wonderful Sauvignon Blanc character at a quality level way beyond a $10 price. In fact, the Wine Spectator review lists the price at $19.99! By the way, Southern Right takes its name from a species of whale off the Cape of South Africa.
If August turns out to be as hot as July, you’ll need a lot more white wine on hand. Here are two chances to stock up on terrific whites at a whale of a deal price.
