Santa Ema was established by Pedro Pavone, the son of Italian winemakers from Piedmont in Italy. Having arrived in the Maipo Valley of Chile in 1917, Pedro was an engineer by trade and spent his early years growing grapes for other wineries. Finally, he established his own brand, Santa Ema, with his son Felix in 1955. Santa Ema produces Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sauvignon Blanc in addition to a Reserve range; Barrel Select line; and a Bordeaux-style red blend called “Catalina." Santa Ema was named one of the top 20 “World’s Finest Value Brands” by Wine Spectator in 2005, so we’re not breaking new ground here. The Pavones know how to make wine!
We think that the Santa Ema portfolio serves as an excellent example of why Chilean wines are arguably the world’s best wine values. When we tasted this sensual Merlot, we were knocked out by how much is delivered in terms of fruit, depth, complexity, balance, and sheer drinkability. It can compete with Merlots priced at $25 or higher. At Wine Legend’s low, low price, Santa Ema Reserve Merlot 2007 WAY over-delivers!
