THE STORY

The first time we offered Fratelli Barba “Vignafranca” Montepulciano d’Abruzzo 2006, we sold out, cleaning the importer out of every last bottle. This wonderful wine was produced by Fratelli Barba, a serious winery dedicated to quality. They employ the services of consulting of the highly regarded Italian enologist Stephano Chiocholi, who brings his vast experience working at some of Italy's best wineries, including Capezzana, Allegrini, Ruffino and Felluga. The vineyards are located in northern Abruzzo, along the Vomano river valley and on the surrounding hills of the "Colline Teramane" territory. This is considered the finest area for growing the Montepulciano grapes for Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

“The 2006 Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Vigna Franca is a magnificent wine for the money. Dark cherries, freshly cut flowers and minerals are just some of the nuances that emerge from this vibrant, exquisite Montepulciano. Today the tannins remain a bit firm but the wine should develop beautifully in bottle over the coming years. This is a fabulous bottle for the money. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022.” WA 91 points

The grapes for this wine come from two low yielding vineyards; Colle della Corte and Vignafranca. Fermentation is in traditional conical wood vats that allow maximum extraction. After fermenting this full-bodied red is aged 14 months in French oak barrels. The 2006 vintage was stellar in the temperate region. The wine shows rich character - cherry, spice and coffee notes on a full rounded frame."
