THE STORY

Bodegas Shaya is a new collaboration between the Gil family of Jumilla and importer Jorge Ordonez.

The Verdejo “Old Vines” 2009 is one of the most impressive wines we have ever tasted from the region of Rueda. The fruit is sourced from very old low yielding vines and this fact comes through on the palate with great nuances of fig, citrus and melon. This is like high class Sancerre for a fraction of the price. Very highly recommended, especially at Wine Legend’s sale price.

The grapes for Habis come from low yielding, very old Verdejo vineyards of which, 12.5 Ha are owned by the winery and divided amongst 5 parcels aged from 75-112 years old and 18 Ha divided amongst 10 parcels are sourced from local growers. The vines are trained in the vaso system and planted in very sandy soils which make possible the fact that many of the vines are ungrafted and over 100 years old. The vineyards have a top layer of small river gravel and underlayment with a small amount of clay. The winemaker is Belinda Thomson from Crawford River Winery in Victoria, Australia, maker of some of the best whites down under.

These are two exciting, original, and brilliantly crafted white wines. They will provide much pleasure when paired with food – or simply drinking by themselves.
Shaya Verdejo Old Vines 2009

Shaya Verdejo Old Vines 2009

"The Verdejo grapes for the 2009 Shaya are sourced from both estate vineyards and local growers with vine age ranging from 75-112 years. The wine was barrel-fermented and aged on its lees. Medium straw-colored, if offers up an alluring aroma of baking spices, spring flowers, and peach. On the palate it has a creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and intense flavors leading to a lengthy, fruit-filled finish. It is a great value in dry, aromatic white wine that over-delivers in a big way."

Shaya Verdejo Habis 2008

Regular Price : $24.99  Sale Price: $19.99

“The 2008 Shaya Habis is a special selection that is also barrel-fermented and aged on its lees in large oak. It displays a nose of toasty baking spices, nutmeg, spring flowers, marzipan, and pit fruits. A bit richer and more complex on the palate than the “regular” cuvee, this vibrant effort could evolve for 1-2 years but is drinking well now."
