The 2008 Burgundy vintage saw Mother Nature throw several challenges at vignerons. Those who are only comfortable with “no brainer” vintages struggled. However, Burgundy’s finest winemakers were up to the challenges, resulting in many very impressive wines.
The white wines are more complete as a whole and more homogenous. The reds may vary more, but show a lovely freshness and clarity. One winemaker summed up why he loved the 2008s: “Every nuance of the terroir is revealed in this vintage. You can see everything."
We wanted to form our own opinions about the vintage and recently attended a tasting of 2008 Burgundies sponsored by Burgundy importer Frederick Wildman & Sons at their office in Summit. Indeed, there were several wines at the tasting that knocked us out. These are the highlights, 2008 Burgundies that we strongly recommend:

Domaine Olivier Leflaive Meursault 2008

Unusually good for an AC Meursault, possessing all of the nutty character, good acidity, and minerality we'd expect from a fine Meursault. The slight oak treatment adds to the overall package. Excellent with food or simply quaffing by itself.

Domaine Olivier Leflaive Corton Charlemagne 2008

Rich, powerful, and youthful, this wine showed all the tell tale signs of the Grand Cru that it is. Clearly made for the cellar right now, this Corton-Charlemagne will reward patience. Highly recommended.

(Domaine Christian Moreau)
It was hard for us to step away from Moreau’s table as all eight offerings, from AC Chablis up to the Grand Crus, were fabulous. Mr. Moreau’s smile as he poured was very telling, as there is no doubt that he knew that he hit many home runs with his 2008s. Our favorite? Go with the Les Clos, although several others were not far behind.

Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Blanc Champs Pimont 2008

This bargain priced wine embodies the vintage with its delicious, fresh Pinot Noir flavors. The bouquet suggests a more prestigious appellation with its clean, floral scents. Terrific on the palate too, with superior texture and drive. Great stuff!

(Domaine Humbert Freres)
This producer has had a meteoric rise into the upper echelon of Burgundy as more and more consumers discover just how excellent Humbert’s wines are. We recommend that you start with this Bourgogne Rouge, which captures Humbert’s authentic style without cleaning out your wallet. At the other end of the spectrum, the 2008 Charmes-Chambertin from this Domaine is off-the-charts spectacular, but considerably more expensive.

(Domaine Sylvain Cathiard)
Rarely do we taste a village wine that delivers as much complexity and depth of flavor as this offering. Needs a little time to settle down but has an enormously bright future. And if you can afford Cathiard’s 1er Cru “Malconsorts,” you’ll taste one of the best 1er Cru reds in all of Burgundy!
