THE STORY
“If you want extreme, come to Puglia. It’s here where the Italian sun shines its brightest and where agriculture is at its most abundant. In the terra rossa—Puglia’s iron-rich red clay soils—gigantic olive trees provide large circles of shade and vineyards line each picturesque vista.
The sultry south is home for Torre Quarto, owned by the Farussi family who has made wine here, off and on, for generations.Stefano Cirillo Farrusi, the youngest grandson of the original owner hired enologist Cristoforo Pastore to help isolate the estate's most suitable vines and focus overall on the best local and unusual grape varietals.
These include the fruity and juicy red Uva di Troia, the powerful Aglianico, Primitivo, the alleged grandmother of Zinfandel, and a bushel of Cabernet Sauvignon and Montepulciano. First among equals for Torre Quarto, however, is Uva di Troia, which, in the region between Cerignola and the Castel del Monte, thrives with ample aromatics and powerful tannins.”

Colosi Nero D'avola 2008

The 2007 Nero d'Avola is made from the property's best fruit and is aged exclusively in stainless steel, which is somewhat of a departure from the norm. No matter, the approach clearly works. This is a gorgeous, full-bodied Nero d'Avola bursting with sweet dark cherries, menthol, sage and flowers. It offers notable clarity and elegance, something I can't say too often about the wines of Sicily. Simply put, this is an incredible value. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2011.

Terrabianca Campaccio 2005

The 2005 Campaccio (70% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon) needs time to develop its full potential, but even at this early stage it is a generous, full-bodied wine imbued with dark fruit, tobacco, earthiness, licorice and toasted oak. The tannins build on the finish, but the wine appears to have the requisite fruit to provide balance. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

Poggio Al Tesoro 2007

Made from 40% Syrah, 30% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon harvested in September and aged for 8 months in barriques. Mediterra perfectly reflects the terroir of Bolgheri and expresses a fantastic balance between the freshness of its fragrances and its warm and powerful structure. Its peppered notes, typical of the Syrah, are intermingled with aromas of fruits of the Mediterranean macchia.
