THE STORY
“There are very few Australian wines that can boast 4 varieties deliberately blended together to achieve a wine that tastes so complete. This blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Merlot & Cabernet Sauvignon has good palate weight and structure without any hint of aggressive young tannins as they have been balanced out by the Grenache and Merlot. This wine is formulated to allow for early drinking however the addition of the Shiraz and in particular the Cabernet gives the wine focus, length and ageability. Aptly named Quarterback as the 4 varieties are in approximately equal proportions. This is blending at its wonderfully, challenging best.”

De Lisio Quarterback 2007

Last year I was shown four De Lisio wines, this year only the entry level 2007 Quarterback, a sign of the times in a microcosm. The wine is a blend of 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 26% Shiraz, and 17% Grenache aged for 15 months in seasoned French oak. Dark ruby in color, it delivers an enticing bouquet of floral notes, spice box, black cherry, and blueberry. Full-bodied, ripe, and sweetly-fruited on the palate, it manages to retain a sense of elegance. This lengthy blend has enough structure to evolve for 1-2 years but there is no reason to delay your gratification. It is also an excellent value.

R Wines Chris Ringland Cote Rotie Shiraz 2008

"This is the third vintage of Chris Ringland Cote Rotie Shiraz. The 2008 was sourced from 20-60 year old Barossa vines and aged in seasoned American oak hogsheads. Deep purple-colored, it emits a captivating, already complex nose of smoke, incense, Asian spices, and blueberry. Velvety-textured, intense, full-bodied, and powerful on the palate, this rich effort will drink well for another 8-10 years. It is a steal at the modest asking price."

Two Hands Gnarly Dudes Shiraz 2007

Inky ruby. Intensely perfumed bouquet of dark berries, candied cherry and smoky Indian spices. Broad, fleshy red and dark berry flavors are impressively deep and subtly sweet, with notes of licorice and bitter chocolate adding complexity. Smooth and seemingly tannin-free on the persistent, sappy finish.

The opaque purple-colored 2007 Bishop is 100% Shiraz sourced from 80- to 120-year-old vines and aged for 14 months in seasoned French and American oak. It offers up an alluring bouquet of lavender, spice box, and wild blueberry leading to a layered, opulent wine with tons of succulent blue fruit, soft tannins, and rich flavors. Give it 2-3 years to more fully blossom and drink it from 2010 to 2022.
