THIS CAT IS NOW OUT OF THE BAG AND PURR-FECTLY PRICED! THE 92 POINT RATED MACROSTI CHARDONNAY WILD CAT MOUNTAIN 2007 WAS $40 AND IS NOW ON SALE FOR $25!
THE STORY
‘MacRostie Winery and Vineyards was founded by winemaker Steve MacRostie in 1987. As a believer in the unique character of Carneros fruit, and an innovative winemaker pioneering a more fresh and sophisticated style of Chardonnay, Steve dedicated himself to crafting wines embodying an authentic sense of place. Throughout the 1990s, Steve continued to refine quality, both in the winery, and in the vineyards, while at the same time maintaining MacRostie’s commitment to fair pricing, fair and ethical business practices, and the environment. During this period, Steve discovered an amazing mountainside ranch possessing spartan volcanic soils over fractured andesite, located in the western borderlands of Carneros. Situated partly in the Sonoma Coast appellation, this ranch enjoyed a unique microclimate that Steve believed would be ideally suited to producing profound Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. In 1997, inspired by a desire to cultivate his own great piece of land, Steve’s adventurous spirit led him to enter into a partnership with Nancy and Tony Lilly to develop Wildcat Mountain Vineyard from this unplanted pastureland. That same year, MacRostie also moved its winery to a facility south of Sonoma.’

"Structure marks this fine wine, made from MacRostie's signature vineyard. Although you'll find a wealth of pineapples, Fuji apples and ripe pears, it has a minerality that makes it firm, and a clean, acidic finish. Elegant and classy, and could age for six years."

"Our best of tasting is an old friend, but better known for its higher-end Chardonnay. Newton Red Label, which proves that it is possible to make a Chardonnay that tastes like real wine for $20. It has the kinds of tastes we like in a Chardonnay-ripe fruit, some oak, good acidity, nice mouthfeel all balanced and real. Wine is made from grapes; it should taste like fruit. That shouldn't be too much to ask. Newton says it made 25,000 cases of the Red Label that were distributed nationwide. In our most recent tasting of Chardonnay that cost between $20 and $50, in 2005, the 2001 Newton Unfiltered was one of our favorites."

There's wonderful perfumed, floral aromas of honeysuckle, lavender, ripe pear and apple in this pure, rich and silky white, which unfolds to reveal layers of fruit and light spicy, toasty oak nuances. Drink now through 2016.

Light gold. Powerfully scented bouquet of lemon, orange, iodine and floral honey, with a suave spicy undertone. The citrus flavors repeat on the palate, along with gingerbread and tangy mineral qualities. Very fresh and precise, with excellent finishing lift and lingering minerality. This got about 38% new oak but I'm not seeing, or feeling it.
