Sesti Brunello Di Montalcino 2003

"Medium red, with a hint of amber at the edge. Lovely perfumed aromas and flavors of cherry, leather, tobacco and dried flowers. Sweet, precise and high-pitched, with impressive energy giving the wine excellent grip. Conveys an impression of intensity without weight. The rising finish is suave, fresh and very long. Superb sangiovese complexity here, with virtually no sign of the vintage's heat. A beauty." ST

Fuligni Brunello Di Montalcino 2003

Fuligni's gorgeous 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage. Made in a style that captures elements of both traditional and modern styles, it presents a very attractive array of ripe red fruits, smoke, tar and tobacco and toasted oak on a firm, classically-built frame. While it isn't quite as fresh as some of the other Brunellos from this part of the zone, its seamless texture and silky tannins make for a beautifully-balanced wine to enjoy now and over the next dozen years or so. This is just about as good as it gets in the tricky 2003 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.

Podere Salicutti Brunello Poggione 2003

Salicutti's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is simply gorgeous. Delicate, perfumed aromatics emerge from the glass, followed by suggestions of sweet red cherries, tobacco, smoke and underbrush. Medium in body, the wine possesses superb length and finessed tannins, in an understated style that relies more on finesse than sheer power. The use of oak is subtle and masterful. The Piaggione was fermented in stainless steel, where it subsequently underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was then racked into 5-hectoliter French oak barrels, then 10-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and finally a 40-hectoliter Slavonian oak cask
