THE STORY Clerico is one of the most respected names in all Barolo, and his wines are renowned for both winemaking of the highest quality and for exceptional character, deriving from outstanding vineyard holdings in four of the greatest crus of Monforte: Ginestra, Bussia, Pajana and Mosconi. Farming Practices: No systemic plant protection products (products which act by systemic transport - through the sap of the plant) are used. Sulfur- and copper-based products are the most prevalent. No herbicides are used (the soil is tilled). When needed, only organic fertilizer (manure) is used. There is little use of fertilizers in order to keep the grape production per vine low. Very careful use of SO2 in the wines. Of the Barolo wines, Clerico's is perhaps the least archetypal--or rather the one in which the style of the producer is most noticeable. It has a concentration of color most outstanding and unusual in Barolo: even after three years of aging, most of which is in wood, it still retains a deep, vivid ruby with a mulberry ripeness that is remimiscent of a Grand Echezeaux. Clerico Barolo 'pajana' 2003 Focused and very clean, with crushed blackberry and spices that follow through to a full-bodied palate, with hints of jammy and cedary character. Balanced and pretty, with a long, long finish. Best after 2011. 830 cases made. Full-bodied, with a solid core of fruit and very powerful tannins. This is chewy and powerful. Massive. Fresh as well. Best after 2012. 245 cases made.
