THE STORY
"The Collelceto Wine Estate owes its name to the many holm oaks, commonly known as ilex or leccio trees, that give the hills to the southwest of the commune of Montalcino their appeal and their colors. The estate's vineyards and winery are located in that zone.
The terrain in which the vines that yield this Brunello di Montalcino grow consists of a fresh clayey base with a rich content of crumbled rock. Because of that characteristic, the vines are not subjected to severe shortages of water in the final stages of ripening.
Exposure is to the southwest. Grapes used: 100% Sangiovese Grosso"

Proprietor Elia Palazzesi has crafted a very pretty 2003 Brunello di Montalcino. Made in a delicate, understated style for the vintage, the wine offers outstanding depth and persistence in its expression of ripe dark fruit. Podere Salicutti Brunello Poggione 2003
Salicutti's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino Piaggione is simply gorgeous. Delicate, perfumed aromatics emerge from the glass, followed by suggestions of sweet red cherries, tobacco, smoke and underbrush. Medium in body, the wine possesses superb length and finessed tannins, in an understated style that relies more on finesse than sheer power. The use of oak is subtle and masterful. The Piaggione was fermented in stainless steel, where it subsequently underwent malolactic fermentation. The wine was then racked into 5-hectoliter French oak barrels, then 10-hectoliter Slavonian oak casks and finally a 40-hectoliter Slavonian oak cask

Il Poggione Brunello 2003
I found the 2003 Brunello di Montalcino a difficult wine to understand. I imagine the warmth of the vintage is a significant factor, but the 2003 is a decidedly modern, lush Brunello from Il Poggione. As this full-bodied Brunello opens in the glass, notes of dark fruit, leather, spices, chocolate and tobacco emerge, supported by the firm tannins that are the hallmark of this vintage. There is notable clarity here, but fans of the estate should expect an atypically ripe style in this vintage. Fuligni Brunello Di Montalcino 2003
Fuligni's gorgeous 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is unquestionably one of the stars of the vintage. Made in a style that captures elements of both traditional and modern styles, it presents a very attractive array of ripe red fruits, smoke, tar and tobacco and toasted oak on a firm, classically-built frame. While it isn't quite as fresh as some of the other Brunellos from this part of the zone, its seamless texture and silky tannins make for a beautifully-balanced wine to enjoy now and over the next dozen years or so. This is just about as good as it gets in the tricky 2003 vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2015.
