THE STORY
"Perched above the famous Villa Rotondo, the Fucci property towers over the heart of the Aglianico del Vulture area
in Basilicata. At 650 meters of altitude the soil is pure black volcanic lava, also locally known as 'pozzolana'. "Titolo" is the name of this Lava channel or "costone", which came down from the now extinct Vulture volcano. Nobody owns vineyards located higher than the Fucci's, no winery harvests later than the Fucci's, making these Aglianico grapes the last grapes harvested in all of Europe for dry red wine making!"

Elana Fucci Aglianico Del Vulture Titolo 2004

Fucci's 2004 Aglianico del Vulture Titolo is a gorgeous version of this wine. It possesses more complexity than the 2005, with a layered personality that flows effortlessly onto the palate. Gorgeous aromatics accompany an array of dark cherries, tobacco, herbs, spices and smoke as the wine reveals the full breadth of its expressiveness. This is a superb effort from Elena Fucci. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016.

Elana Fucci Aglianico Del Vulture Titolo 2005

Very deep red. Complex aromas of raspberry, black cherry, gunflint and violet, plus an attractive, vinous topnote of hard candy. Sweet, supple and silky, with red fruit, tobacco, cedar and delicate smoky flavors nicely framed by strong but harmonious acidity. Plenty of extract here, but the saliva-inducing acidity makes this seem much lighter than it really is. Finishes with slightly grittier tannins than usual and great length. Firmly built for the long haul. This is almost always the most elegant of all Aglianico del Vulture bottlings: in addition to owner Salvatore Fucci's obvious winemaking talents, his grapes come from the Titolo, one of the highest vineyards in Basilicata and the grandest of all possible Vulture grand cru sites. Cellar this for three or four years, then enjoy it over the next ten.
