THE STORY
Campania's Aglianico del Taburno DOC in the province of Benevento, is an excellent source of Aglianico - and at very attractive prices. The region, north of Naples at an elevation of 1,000 feet, has a long growing season, hot days and moderately cool nights. Volcanic soil supports the vines. The Aglianico from this area is fruit-driven, approachable, and ready to drink in the shorter term. Cantina del Taburno is the leading producer in the zone, with two excellent-value Aglianicos: the "Fidelis" and the old-vines all-barrique aged "Delius". Since 1999, winemaking at this site has been the responsibility of Professor Luigi Moio of the University of Naples, who previously oversaw production at Feudi di San Gregorio.

Cantina Del Taburno Aglianico Fidelisgudarrà 2005
Readers looking for a delicious Campanian red that is ready to drink today should consider Cantina del Taburno's 2005 Aglianico del Taburno Fidelis. Black cherries, spices, juniper berries and worn-in leather jump out of the glass as this full-bodied, sumptuous wine reveals the multiple dimensions of its expressiveness. Soft and caressing on the palate, the Fidelis reveals tons of persistence and a long, satisfying finish. The Fidelis is 90% Aglianico and 10% Sangiovese aged in cask. It is a great value. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2013.

"The estate's 2005 Aglianico del Vulture Gudarra is made from the oldest vines on the property, although this is a very young winery, so vine age must be considered in relative terms. The Gudarra is a sumptuous, super-ripe Aglianico that boasts an expansive, creamy-textured core of jammy blueberries, spices, minerals and new French oak. Still remarkably youthful, this exuberant wine will only get better in bottle although it is pretty irresistible today. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2015. " WA
