The Story
"Located in the Gaiole district with vast extensions of vineyard land into the Castellina district of the Chianti Classico, Rocca di Castagnoli may be the Classico's largest estate in acreage planted to vine. This does not hinder the thriving estate to produce some of the most distinguished examples of Chianti Classico. By bottling only the very best from their production, results of great typical character have been achieved. Also contributing to this character is clearly the soil - 'Galestro' is a stone look alike compacted form of clay, which captured high amounts of minerals. This estate represents the rare quest for classical, acidity driven, but ripe Chianti Classico from higher altitude vineyards.
The little village, or borgo, of Castagnoli has existed since the early Middle Ages. The first reliable documentation dates back as far as the year 900 AD and concerns the sale of a holding called Stielle, which still today is the name and location of the best vineyard within the Rocca di Castagnoli estate. Owned by the Cali family, this estate has shown great integrity by aiming at a vineyard distinction on each label, to document the variety of soils and microclimates that make the Chianti Classico so famous. Today Rocca di Castagnoli is the only estate developing new head pruned Sangiovese vineyards in the Classico region."

Rocca Di Castagnoli Stielle Vino Da Tavola 2001

The 2001 Stielle, Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is notably dark in color, tarry, smoky, and with rich notes of rosemary and graphite on the nose. Solid, long, and mineral, its flavors of mint and sweet berry fruit make this a very convincing effort. Drink: 2006-2018.

Antinori Tignanello 2005

Pretty and fresh aromas of flowers, berry and licorice. Full-bodied, with ultrafine tannins and a solid core of fruit. Very pretty and balanced. Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best after 2011. 26,250 cases made.
WINE SPECTATOR, 92 POINTS
The 2005 Tignanello is not terribly dissimilar to the 2004 in style, although it is unquestionably a smaller-scaled wine. There is notable clarity and precision in the wine's red fruit, smoke, minerals, tobacco and spices. The signature Tignanello elegance is there, the only question is whether there is enough sheer density to stand up to the wine's structural components. Today my impression is that there is not, but I still have high expectations for this vintage considering how wines from far lesser years have developed. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

Ornellaia Le Serre Nuove Bolgheri Rosso 2006

The 2006 Le Serre Nuove, the estate's second wine from Ornellaia, will challenge many of the top bottlings in this vintage for years to come. The 2006 is a rich, sumptuous wine bursting with ripe dark fruit, smoke, tobacco, grilled herbs, new leather, minerals and tar. The wine possesses superb density and explosive, utterly irresistible personality. At roughly one-third the price of its big sibling Ornellaia, the 2006 Le Serre Nuove is a must-purchase wine. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2022. The 2006 Ornellaia flows from the glass in a profound expression of ripe, dark fruit.
